Animation, VFX and Game Design as a Career: A Guide for Class 10 & 12 Students in Bengaluru

Is this a 'real' career, or just a hobby that got a course built around it?

Animation, VFX, game design and digital design are real, employed industries — the shows and streaming series you watch, the games you play, and the apps you use every day were built by people in these exact roles. Bengaluru specifically has grown into a significant hub for offshore VFX and animation production, a large game-development and mobile-gaming scene, and India's biggest concentration of product/UI-UX design jobs, because it's also India's largest tech hub.

That said, like any creative field, outcomes are not automatic. What actually gets someone hired is a strong portfolio or showreel built through consistent practice — a course gives you structure, software training and industry-relevant projects, but the portfolio is what a studio actually looks at.

If you're finishing Class 10

Almost all structured MAAC diploma and degree-pathway programmes (including every course in the MAAC Whitefield catalogue) require a Class 12 pass for admission — there isn't a shortcut around finishing school first, and that's a genuinely reasonable requirement rather than red tape.

The two years between Class 10 and Class 12 are not wasted time, though. Use them to build a habit: sketch regularly, watch films and games with a more analytical eye (why does this shot work? why is this level fun?), and try free or low-cost tools (Blender, Krita, simple game engines) to see which part of this world actually excites you before committing to a specialisation.

If you're finishing Class 12

This is the normal entry point. Your two broad choices are a shorter, faster diploma-style programme aimed at getting into a studio role sooner, or a longer integrated/degree pathway programme that builds a wider foundation (and, where offered, a recognised degree alongside the skill training) before you specialise.

Neither is objectively 'better' — it depends on whether you already know your specialisation, your timeline, and whether a formal degree matters for your family's plans or for programmes you might pursue later.

What about a degree, not just a diploma?

MAAC Whitefield is authorised to offer a UGC-recognised B.Voc (Bachelor of Vocation) pathway in Animation & Visual Effects alongside its diploma-style programmes, with an exit ladder — a UG Certificate after year one, a UG Diploma after year two, and the full B.Voc degree after year three — so a change of plan partway through doesn't mean leaving with nothing.

As with any admissions programme: university admission is subject to eligibility, and placement assistance is support, not a guaranteed job offer. Confirm current eligibility (Class 12 pass with the required aggregate) and the awarding university directly with a counsellor before enrolling.
