What's the difference between VFX and compositing?

VFX (visual effects) is the whole discipline — modelling, simulation, tracking, rendering and more. Compositing is the specific, final craft of combining all of those elements into one finished shot. Every VFX pipeline needs compositors; not every compositor needs to do the earlier steps.

Can I become a compositor without a film background?

Yes — most working compositors are trained on the software and technique, not in film school. What matters is a trained eye and comfort with a node-based, iterative workflow, both of which a structured course builds through repetition.

What does a VFX Compositor actually do?

A compositor is the last craft station before a VFX shot is called finished: they take rendered CG passes, live-action plates, matte paintings and simulations and layer them together so the join is invisible.

The work is equal parts technical (colour science, tracking, keying, node graphs) and artistic (matching grain, light wrap, colour grade and depth so a CG element sits in real footage rather than floating on top of it).

Compositors typically work in Foundry Nuke on a node-based graph, reviewing shots against a reference plate and a supervisor's notes across many revision passes.

A day in the life of a VFX Compositor

Morning	Review notes from the previous day's dailies and reprioritise the shot list.
Mid-morning	Pull in updated CG renders (beauty, AO, depth, cryptomatte passes) and rebuild the comp's node tree around them.
Afternoon	Match grain, colour and light interaction between the CG element and the live-action plate.
Late afternoon	Render a version, check it on a calibrated monitor, and submit to the compositing supervisor.
Ongoing	Track shots through review rounds until 'final' is called by the client or VFX supervisor.
